Day Three

Date: 5/11/22

Current Time: 4:15

Today’s Time: 6:30 hrs

Overall Time: 16:50 hrs

Today I made good progress on a few different things. First, Greg went at some point to Belletetes and was able to snag a really good piece of wood for the shaft of my oars. Which I should be starting work on relatively soon.

The epoxy coat from yesterday turned out really well!

Today I roughed it up so I can put on some varnish on it to finish it off. After that, I sanded the other bench with 80 then 120 then 220 grit sandpaper to prepare it for varnish as well.

After that, I continued my hunt online for oarlocks and sockets. I found exact matches to what I was able to scavenge from the boat already however with a $90 price tag I want to explore some other options first. Luckily, John Bouton stopped by at just about this time. He had some books about Whitehall boats and offered to donate an old oarlock socket to my cause, assuming it will fit.

After lunch, it was time to head to the hardware store where I picked up hull paint, cleaning supplies, and marine varnish!

Once I got back, I started cleaning out the dirt stains that had made their home in my boat. I made the mistake of leaning over when cleaning inside and got a massive lungful of pure ammonia cleaner. After that, I diluted it with water. Anyway, no matter the smell, it cut right through everything.

Lastly, I hit both of the newly sanded benches with a coat of varnish!
