Day One
Date: 5/9/22
Current Time: 7:45
Project Time: 4:00 hrs
Overall Time: 4:00 hrs
Well, here I am. I gotta say, this project has changed a few times since I started work this winter. My original plan was to adapt the Whitehall boat that has been sitting around campus for who knows how long into a fully rigged sailboat with the sail plan of a Force 5 boat (pictured below).
The day started off not very fun, I had an AP Exam. After the slight pain of AP Calculus and a quick bite to eat, I headed off to the woodshop. Most of the morning I spent planning. I sketched out the locations of the oarlocks on the gunwales, 13 inches from the aft edge of the rowing seat. I also found resources online about how to actually make a set of oars, which will be very helpful in a few days.

That... hasn’t exactly worked out. Even with all of the Winter term and a big chunk of Spring, all I was able to do was make, install, and mostly finish a set of gunwales (pictures soon!). It turns out it’s a lot of work to make a boat look nice! Now my goal is to clean up the hull of the boat and make two sets of oars to go along with it. Anyway, that’s enough of that, you probably want to know what I worked on today, right?

After I had all my measurements laid out, I took to Facebook Marketplace looking for some of the expensive bronze parts I will need to hold the oars once finished. Then I took some epoxy to the deep scratches in the hull below the waterline. Once it cures, I will sand then paint over it to get a nice clean look! Finally, I began the process of sanding the benches that came with the boat. They had been varnished in the past but water must have gotten under that coat because there is a bit of mold. Nothing a few hours of sanding won’t fix! By the end of the day, I was able to get the entire underside of one of the benches sanded with 80 and then 120 grit sandpaper.
Tomorrow I will run my oar dimensions past Greg, continue sanding the benches, and probably sand down the epoxy I used to repair the hull.

Sounds great! Awesome 1st day!
