Day Eleven

I started out the same way that I did yesterday, by rubbing then varnishing my oars and rails. I ended up mixing to much of the varnish and paint thinner mix I use so I added an extra layer of varnish to the benches as well.
After that, It was time to come up with a design for my name plate! I had the piece of wood I wanted to use picked out already, some kind of tropical wood that even Greg can’t identify. I took to the internet and printed some simple rose line art to copy onto the wood. Next I looked for a good font with the help of Aspen. I put everything together using the name I decided on a few days ago, Merry Rose. There are a few meaning to the name, for instance, one would hope to have some, Merry Rows on my boat! Anyway, bad puns aside, after I found my stencils, I did some practice with the dremel. Originally, I just dremeled through the paper to get the pattern, but that got messy so I traced the lines with a razor blade then cut along the razor marks in the wood. I thought about using a wood burning iron, rather than the dremel, but I decided against it. Here is what I came up with in the end!
I want to try to get the lines a bit deeper, and I might paint in the lines so they are more visible, but I’m pretty happy with how it came out. I was kinda shocked about how long the entire process took, almost all day. Hand tools are pretty slow, I’ve found.
