Day Four

Date: 5/12/22

Current Time: 4:55

Today’s Time: 6:30 hrs

Overall Time: 23:20 hrs

No pictures today, unfortunately, I completely forgot to take a few, but I’ll get them tomorrow. Today I finally started working on my oars! Because it was such a huge piece of wood, Greg and I worked together to process and then cut the 2x10 board. I then glued everything together to make two long square blanks. Tomorrow I will cut these into octagons to make it easier to smooth them out into an actual handle.

I also rubbed out the benches I varnished yesterday with steel wool and added another coat of varnish as well.

Lastly, I rallied together with the last woodworking class of the day and flipped my boat over. I’m glad I had the help because that boat is surprisingly heavy, it was a good opportunity to see if my gunwales would hold up and they did! Anyway, after it was flipped, I spent the next two hours straight sanding the bottom of the hull. It was covered with an assortment of dried silt, old epoxy, varnish, and what I think was a splotch of black paint, all left by the last owner.

Tomorrow, I will continue working on the oars and probably will start repainting the underside!
